Sex drive – as thorny a topic as weightloss, but for some reason, much less openly discussed.  As we get older, should our sex drive diminish?  Or maybe the question should be why does sex drive go down as age goes up?

Its a complex, multi factorial subject.

But there are two fundamental depressors.  Lack of zinc and stress.

Zinc.

Zinc is a building block of testosterone.  I remember when Charles Poliquin launched his product, Uber Zinc and said if it were called Biceps Blaster, it would fly off the shelves.  And very few women would buy it! As well as vital for building a decent set of biceps, testosterone  is responsible for sex drive and lack of it leads to weedy arms, regular headaches instead of sex, a general lack of vitality and depression and aggression in men.   In order to keep the spring in the step and not keep looking for excuses to avoid sex, women need some testosterone as well as the men.

So not enough zinc means low testosterone levels.

There are at least three reasons why testosterone levels sink: not enough in the diet, poor digestive fire plus a high intake of whole grains.

Zinc is scarce in the soil, so scarce in the diet.  Agro chemicals have seen to that.  Many people who come to see me puport to eat a healthy diet – yet I have never had anyone come anywhere near passing the zinc challenge test.

Poor digestive fire: any bioavailable zinc in the diet comes from principally from meat.  The way the body likes to access its zinc is by sheering it off animal proteins and to do this requires good levels of HCl in the stomach.  A building block of HCl is zinc.  Not enough zinc slowly lowers HCl production so less and less of this precious mineral can be accessed.  A sure sign of not enough HCl is avoiding red meat.

Diet: a high intake of whole grains has a disastrous effect on zinc levels – and magnesium, other vital minerals and also nicacin.  And this is because all whole grains contain anti-oxidant compounds called phytates.  These  enter the digestive tract and latch onto things – including cancers.  But they also latch onto zinc, magnesium, iron and niacin, they bind to these chemicals and make them unavailable for absorption in our digestive tract.  A good thing with cancer, but an appalling thing with the minerals and niacin.

The grain with most phytates in is oats.  So regular oats for breakfast may be touted as healthy  – but, bluntly, the best good effect they have is on the strength of the partner’s wrists as they crank the pump to get things going and on the earnings of divorce lawyers.

If oats have to be eaten, it is essential to soak them overnight in water with a dash of lemon juice.  But a much better breakfast has to be something dead with something fatty.  So steak and avocado pear pummels porridge into dribble of skimmed milk and preserves sex drive, improves brain function and general joy in life.

Stress.

Researchers into stress, such as the fabulous Robert Sapolsky, all say that stress has a disastrous effect on sex drive.  If we are not healthy or life is stressy1 then especially the female body/brain knows this is not a good time to make a new baby, so tries to protect us by lowering sex drive.

Alas, earlier in life, the female sex drive tends to drop, especially if she has made babies.  Making babies along with eating oats and whole grains will disastrously sink her zinc levels.  And her magnesium levels, so she no longer sleeps well, even after the children sleep through the night regularly.  So now she is tired all the time and is losing the spring in her step and naturally wants less and less sex.  Not a good scenario for keeping a marriage long and happy.

Eventually the male joins her from a combination of stress and pathetically low levels of zinc.  Some males then enter the Andropause and buy a sports car and trade in the old wife for a younger model.  After all, she hasn’t given out for years and she has to be to blame for his need to take Viagra to get any action at all.  He didn’t buy into becoming merely a money making mule.

A good sex drive in both sexes, especially as we creep over 50 years old, is like the peak of Mount Kilimanjaro.  Work to get there, wonderful at the top and not everybody can be arsed even to try.  A good sex drive a sign we are healthy and heading for a most excellent old age.

Therefore take an excellent form of zinc supplementation, a highly bioavailable vitamin C plus a magnificent multi.  Take an amino acid based magnesium if sleep is an issue.  Find good ways of de-stressing, which can be as simple as exercising.  And eat a decent diet that revolves around dead things and vegetables.

The three great supplements, Poliquin Multi Intense, Uberzinc and Uber C can all be bought from me.  Contact me through this site. 2

Be patient.  It won’t work tomorrow.

Then the man wakes every morning under a teepee.  And the partner is glad of this.

  1. There are two types of stressors: acute, such as a lack of money making good food scarce, or maybe we are trying to move house and its proving difficult, so we have no safe home; death; diagnosis of a severe illness.  And then there is chronic stress from a huge number of different things, including lack of exercise []
  2. One of my client’s mother pinches his uberzinc – she’s found out where he keeps it.  She is now very proud of her strong nails and tells him that, ‘This stuff is much better than the stuff you buy in Boots!’ []
